About Mr Rishi Singhal
I was appointed as a consultant surgeon in 2014. My NHS practice is at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and I do private work in private hospitals in Birmingham and Solihull. I do gastric sleeve, gastric bypass and gastric band procedures and have developed a special interest in revision weight loss surgery. This is where someone has had a weight loss procedure already and now wants that procedure altered to something else, it might be a gastric band being revised to a gastric bypass for example. This ‘revision’ surgery is more complex than primary surgery. It requires a team of specialists including myself, the anaesthetists, psychologists, dietitians and nurses, We also include other specialists, such as an Endocrinologist, when the patient has diabetes.
I have published extensively on weight loss surgery and present at conferences around the world. My passion for weight loss surgery was inspired by the life-changing transformations that this surgery can offer. It offered a ray of hope to patients who had neglected for so long. Last year I performed gastric bypass surgery on a patient with a BMI of 99. This lady’s progress has been tracked by BBC West Midlands. In the period since her operation, she has lost over 16 stones and completely transformed her life. It’s a wonderful thing for me and my team to see.
